Good stuff Ben. You're still wearing that Bassett stretch out! /'/

I have been trying to sneak down for a week and I finally talked myself into it this morning. The foggy morning added to the usual morning mist on the river.

As I got about halfway down to my jump in, my frequent escorts showed up. High holed by the neighborhood dogs!
Did they learn from the master high holer, himself?  b';

Got into fish pretty quickly, mostly on the dropper. Not very big fish today, but pretty as always.

The hounds moved back downstream and I jumped over the disturbed hole and kept enjoying the cold water, the kingfishers call, and the late summer flora.

And the fish kept cooperating. I got great satisfaction of catching the nicest fish of the day in a long, slow, shallow section. Lying in the shade, under the tree branches, right where he was supposed to be. And I summoned up the perfect cast and presentation.  ;D

The golden dog came back and was better behaved. The black bitch probably went home because I didn't have any treats.
That reminded me, time to get some grub. I eased out of the river before the generation and started scheming on my next trip.

You did all right, Doug!  It has been awhile since I have fished that river in the morning.  It must be nice to live close enough to do that.

After a long stay away, I made my way back to the Smith.  I went down yesterday and helped out with the clean-up and it gave me the itch to get out and catch a few.  I really didn't know what to expect with clear blue skies and 90 degrees, but I just had to go.

I pull into the designated parking area and found a couple of others with the same idea I had.  I found a pair of sunglasses on the way in if anybody lost a pair out there?

Tied me on a 12 foot 6x leader with a couple more feet of 7x tippet.  Size 16 EHC tied up with a peacock herl body immediately put a fish on the line.

This stuff was thick on the river bottom and looked like a good hiding place for little critters.

[attach=2]

Man these fish loved some sz 16 adams and sz 16 sulphurs.

[attach=3]

All the fish were dinky as could be, but it was still great to get out.  I need to get me a medium action 3wt to have a little more fun wrestling those little guys in.

Admit it Ben - even if you lived right along side the river you won't hit it before noon because you're not an early riser. :P

Good to see a lot of familiar faces at the clean up - Thanks for helping out guys and gals.

Woke up early this morning and jumped on the zero turn and mowed some wet jungle grass.  With the amount of rain we have been getting, two weeks in between mows is tough on the mower.  Finally about noon I made it down to the Smith River fest.  From what I hear it was record turn out.  Dougfish and I had planned to help out at the booth and then head to the river for an evening fish.  About 3 p.m. we made like horse crap and hit the trail.

The river was up a bit and lightly stained.  We both sort of guessed that it was about 6 inches higher than normal.  Its amazing what just a little bit of extra water will do.  Areas that are normally empty or what I would consider useless water proved to be the most productive areas.

It wasn't too long before we were both into fish.

We had a group of paddlers make their way through.

What is a TR without a flower photo?
[attach=3]

We both struggled pretty bad with losing fish.  Plenty rising to our presentations and just not connecting or coming unbuttoned during the retrieve.  But we still managed several a piece.

We fished until I couldn't see my hand in front of my face.

Overall it was a good time on the river.  The brownies were very cooperative.

Until next time...

I met up with Al, Larry and Darrin for a  little tying, socializing and talking to the public about TU and fly fishing at the Smith River Fest. By 3 I was d-o-n-e done and fireboy was chomping at the bit to get his feet wet. Tally ho!

The combination of mid 80's, high humidty and a 4 hour generation made for some awesome fog.
He's up stream in the stew.

He got into fish pretty quick, I got in a few misses and finally got enough separation between us to hit the nice water he had started in. :D
Then the rock grinding, water splashing yak family came along. Forkers. And I couldn't for the life of me handle a fish and take a picture today. Butterfingers with the butter fish.
Caught up with Scott and we started back into them.

As Scott said, Townes Creek had stained the water some, and from increased runoff, and/or increased flow from the dam we had 6 extra inches of water to work with. Definitively spread the fish out some.

We fished until dark and hit a quick little hatch you couldn't even see for last minute action.
We both did well, but he spanked me today. Til next time.

It would be nice if people would bake in their own juices so they could let up on the generation on weekdays.  Sure would like to get out after work.

Great Report!!!

I`m new to Virginia and need to hit the water.  If someone with no experience or knowledge about the Smith was going to fish it, what would you tell them?  Where to fish it? What bugs?  I appreciate the help.

I went back to the Smith yesterday for the first time in several weeks.  I started way upstream in one of my normal  spots and caught 4 in just a few minutes.  I heard some wood ducks squealing and a few minutes later a flock flew over my head.  Shortly after that I heard laughing and a boat floats by with a man and his daughter.  They were nice but it put the fish down.  Close to 30 minutes later I started seeing fish again.  I ended up with about a dozen out of that spot.  I hopped back in the car and headed downstream to Wooly's and Mud's spot.  I don't normally mess with that place as a general rule because of the crowds, but I am glad I stopped.  There wasn't but one car in the parking lot.  I fished for about 2 hours and caught around another dozen.  I left around 8 and arrived home around midnight.  Not a bad day.
