Woolly Bugger

Sunny, upper 70s, windy

I took the 3 wt today.

I was hoping for a "full on"* caddis hatch, it didn't happen. There were spotty risers, but nothing stready. They ignored my blind dry fly casting. I wasn't about to nymph and bobber watch, so I swung a wet and caught a bunch of punes. Against all odds I stayed past sunset. I guess they needed some Amphezyne to get "full on".

A guide in a flycraft came floating through late along with a spin guy in a kayak. Spoted caddis, mayflies and sulfurs, but not in numbers to entice the fish.

*I guess you know I've been watching DTF St. Louis on HBO! The finale, episode 7, drops tonight! It's a dark comedy whodunit. And #1 show on HBO.

Work continures at the damn dam, high pressure hoses are being usef to blast away the dirt and debris donw to bedrock. The crains are used to lift the buckets of material. It looks like they are making good progress and once completed the work inside the powerhouse can resume.

A brief shower dakened the sky and I notied a number of sippers on the water, so I waded in to catch some of the punes by swinging soft hackles. There wasn't much of a hatch, I think the fish were actually sipping midges.

Moved on downstream later in the day and saw decent sulfir hatch and caught a few on the surface with a comparidun before the hatcch petered out.

In other news have any of you been watching Jamie Ding on Jeopardy? He's got 31 wins and over $800,000 in winings, he'll be back on monday and could continue his phenominal streak to move into fourth place in overall regulare champions.

Sulfurs were a poppin aroud 4 and a few of the pesky punes were hittin the surface so I jumped in and caught a couple of handfuls before the hatch petered off. Moved up steeam and watch the birds picking the emerrging bugs off the water and in the air. Caught a few more before sitting on the bank and drinking a beer before driving home.

There were a few other anglers out, fly, spin and kayakers too.

Finally used my Speedway points to get 55 cents off!

There was a little mixed hatch going on in town and I checked out a couple of spots before juming in. The fish weren't rea active so I swung soft hackles and caught a handful of punish punes. I moved to a differnnt run and got a few hits on the soft hackle. When I got to the bottom of the run more fish started hitting the surface and I switched to a dry. I got refusal after refusal, but I kept on cansting the same fly, rationalizing that they were missing the fly. Finally I switched patterns and the game was on. I worn out that run, catching a dozen or so fiesty browns who put up a good fight and were fun to play on the 3 wt. Despite their small size, they are beautifully colored.

That hatch was good enough to get me motivated to fish on Saturday for a couple of hours, but it wasn't as prolific and the fish weren't rising like the day before. I picked up a handful of fish, including a rainbow. That was the first stocker I've caught in a while.

I was low‑ and high‑holed, so I was stuck in an unproductive run. I probably could have picked up more fish on a nymph, but that would've felt lame.

hot, 91 or so, hardly a cloud to be seen.

Looking for a hatch that never really materalized, swung up a handful on soft hackles. Waited for some surface action. Saw one fish rise, tied on a puff daddy and found a fish that was looking up. Kept waiting for it to turn on, it never did and didn't look promising so I spit. I'm not a fan of the low flow river, at 87 cfs from the dam it no longer speaks to me. Jis say'in

X2   They did raise it back up a little today, but brown trout and these high sun, low water days in May don't go together very well.   Rumors of rain coming, do the rain dance...
