They also like to present counties with trout sustainable water (even if its seasonal) an opportunity to easily catch eating size trout.
DWR gets a lot of social and political pressure.
Henry Co's only option is the Smith.
I don't like it, but I know why they do it.
They made the monster, they have to feed it.

Put and take trout fishing can occur almost anywhere. Blueways, greenways, municipal ponds.

Quote from: trout-r-us on December 06, 2022, 19:01:04 PMA while back, I asked VDGIF the question as to why the state would stock over wild trout and was told:
-Lots of anglers buy a license and enjoy fishing for the stockers.
-There is concern that much of the current river access would be closed off if stocking was discontinued.

Your point number 2 is a main driver of why stocking still happens in thriving wild waters in the NC high country. Avery Co, Ashe Co, Watauga Co.   The private owners who allow access to stocking will tighten up if the stocking isn't cont'd.  Don't need to have any more water off limit.

Note: I haven't taken a fishing photo since the end of September.

Not to worry.
With all the fish you've caught up there over the last couple years, I doubt there are many remaining whose picture we haven't seen. 😆

I've been back a couple of times recently, 4 hours one day and 3 hours yesterday.

I'm still working on my spey game. I pulled up to a run and was getting geared up when I saw a blue raft coming down the fiffle. Awe crap. The anchored up in the lower run and I briefly thought about moving, but stuck it out and worked the upper run. My casting is improving  little by little. I'll make a great cast and then on the very next one start thinking about it too much and flub the cast. I had a grab or two and that was all for that run. I must admit that I didn't expect much, thinking that the raft may have caused lock jaw on the trouts.

By this time the floaty boat was moving on down and I hit the run they had vacated. There I made one cast that impressed me! Long cast, tight loop, running line sailing through the guides. Picture perfect. That cast, tight to the bank, swinging through the riffle, deserved a fish, but I was denied again.

I moved on and worked several more spots, and despite several more grabs and seeing a decent brown swipe at the fly, none were caught.

Maybe I'll go back to euro nymphing....  n!n

Been a while.
I had not been down to the river since they bumped the flows back up.
Cold, cloudy day. Maybe BWO's?

Left the euro rod in the truck and took the finesse rod.
Beavers have gotten more active.

Not much was happening on top, but I tried my new money dry fly anyhow.
Worked up the run with no takers.
Clipped it off and tied on a soft hackle.
Finished my beer to rest the run and started back down.
Bump on the second cast and a fish on the fifth.

It went like that for the next hour.
Then I realized I was pretty freakin cold.
Waded in to warm up. Never really did.

Walked up stream to warm up and the sun started hitting me.
Thank you!

Fished the lefthander hole and managed one more.

Hiked up further and almost quit.
Saw a couple risers on the far side.
Giddy up.
Waded up above them and could not get a bite on the dry.
Again.
Put the soft hackle back on and got a couple more.

Sorry but I don't get on here as much as I used to and just now saw the questions about DWR presentation at SRTU meeting - also question about stocking.

I don't have the slides but from what I saw the fish are getting a little bigger. Current thinking is the constant flows without generation has been good for the fishery. Lot's of fish and good recruitment of recent stream spawned browns. Lots more forage in the river which means trout are eating well. It appears the fishery below MV dam is still there but not as many fish. However, the fish that have adapted are real nice ones.

Ref stocking - fear is that without stocking many of the landowners would post their land. On the other hand the relatively new campground below Stanleytown Bridge has been recently posted and not accessible to wade fishermen unless you are a camper. George said there is talk about no longer stocking at the bridge because they are essentially stocking the campground's private stream. Some of the float guys were there and bristled at that idea as that section is one of their most productive sections (probably because the locals are not fishing and placing the stockers on a stinger).

Last trip before Christmas. Cold rain for the next 2 days.
Then the bitter cold front rolls in.  b';

I took my time and tied up a few flies before pulling out.
I should have waited another hour or more.
On the longest day of the year, the east to west ridge blocked most of the sun.
Even at mid day it never got to the south banks.
And the water was back to being murky.
And no risers were seen.
I did remember my fleece pants.

Tied on a fresh soft hackle and waded out into the shade as the wind started coming down the river.
A couple of early bumps got my hopes up.
But by the time I had navigated down to my exit point, I only had 3 small feesh to hand.

I waded in to get in the sun and thaw.
The wind was still on me so I decided to go up and see if I could find a sunnier stretch with less wind.
Found a good spot and had lunch.

Left my cooler and walked up to wade this stretch.
Much more comfortable.
But not very productive.
2 more small ones.
Grabbed the cooler and headed up further.

Sally's hole yielded nothing and I hiked out.
Went to the Roanoke TU social that night and told them to stay away, the Smith fishes like shit.  :P
I'll be back after Christmas.
Until them, I wish you the best.
And laser beams.

I was going to try and squeak in another day but I see that they bumped the flow up beyond what I expected. The last time I was up there was on the 17th. I stopped at a lower spot and saw an angler swinging flies with a single hand spey cast, I didn't see him catch anything in the short time that I watched. I moved on to another run and swung up a couple of 14" stockerbows, which was better than nothing. The only notable thing to photograph was the lower gas prices. (sheetz discount points applied)

Nothing was happening.
Swung mini intruders. Through 3 runs.
Rested.
Swung soft hackles. Same 3 runs.
Rested.
Nymphs under indicator.
Nothing x 3.

And yes, dumb asses take aluminum boats down the upper river.

#23-1 Gas $2.99 temp 66 and overcast.

I finished up 2022 with around 126 days, I pretty much stopped counting / reporting the few measly trips I took in November and December. With the new year I'm hoping things will be more normal, although I don't think I'll break 100 days this year.

This is a rather bizarre version of the CNSY song Long Time Gone. Take a look at Neil's and David's reactions, I think they are in a bit of pain.

On with the report... I was keeping an eye on the river and after seeing some Instagram post, I thought I'd head downriver and swing some flies. I pulled into an empty lot just before 3 and planned to fish until dark. I donned my waders and rigged the spey pole with a sinktip with a small lightly weighted chartreuse and white clouser. I hiked it and was a bit taken aback by the volume of water, it was really a torrent in some of the places I had planned to fish.

I managed to wade out far enough to clear the overhaning trees and snap-t a cast out across the current. I was constantly worried about hitting the trees with rod or line, but I somehow managed to stay clear. After a couple of dozen cast I got felt a strong grab and I had a good fish on. I set the hook twice and the fish leapt out of the water. It put up a good fight using the current to help it peel line off the real. I worked the fish back across the current and then, after some head shakes and thrashing on the surface it threw the hook. Damn!

Later, on down a ways, I hooked another fish on a different fly. I wasn't a big as the first fish and it was a bit beat up, with it's tail torn up. Not sure if this was building a redd during the spawn or what.

I fished on until fiveish and then, running out of new water that I could access I headed out and drove into town for a beer.

That was truly a bizarre video. Tom Jones with CSN&Y?  But I'm not sure on your point about Neil and David. First of all, Neil always looked severely constipated back then and who knows what David was on.  In any event, Tom Jones?  Sheesh p;-

Looks like a good day even if low numbers.  Thanks as always, for sharing.

Your video takes me back about 50 years to when we went to see Tom Jones perform a couple times at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill. He was quite a crooner with the ladies. 🤣
