Woolly Bugger

#1665

One of the hottest days of the year convinced me to wet wade the Smith in the afternoon. No one was in the parking lot when I arrived shortly after four. I dunked the Comparadun into some homebrew flyargra while I geared up. Stuffed some beers into the vest and headed across the field. A deer ran through the mirror plant parking lot and there were a couple more crossing the river below where I stepped into the cool water.

Failed to raise a trout in some usual spots but a little twitch of the comparadun got one to rise in the next spot and number two came shortly after that just at four kayaks floated behing me. The dad hollered out, "Thst the first fish that we've seen caught today!"

I was hoping for a bang up day, but that wasn't in the cards as things slowed down dramatically and I couldn't get another fish to hand. Time for a beer break. I picked up this brew at Trader Joe's. Brewed in Michigan, I thought it couldn't be too bad, boy was I wrong. I really thought it smelled like wet rocks, kind of mineral or chemical odor. Taste not much better, but it was cold and wet and I choked it down.

I moved on down to another productive run and was then high holed by a skein of Canada geese.

The fish weren't biting so I looked around and took some photos and drank another beer or two.

As I was taking a photo of this Garden Spider a moth (I think) got trapped in the web and like a flash the spider was off to inject its poison and wrap up its meal in more silk in a second. Then it returned to its resting spot waiting for another victim.

I began to see some more risers and went after them.

I continued on until it was beyond reason and I could no longer see my fly on the water.

Saw some ladybugs getting it on. "The mating and courtship rituals of ladybugs are poorly understood but to attract a mating
partner, ladybugs secrete pheromones and, once a suitable partner is found, the insects copulate for up to 2 hours."

I was planning to go to the Smith for a morning session before getting ready for some evening activities. Something woke me up at four A.M. and I decided to empty the bladder before getting back to sleep, I did check the weather and stream data to make sure the trip would be worth it. Then I got a call from the Translywader which I declined and then he sent a series of text and I finally answered when he called back. I had figured that he would be jrunk, but he sounded sober. We talked for a while and made some tentative plans for a fall surf donkey trip.

Now I was awake and I got up and went out for breakfast before driving up to the river. I was drizzling and the radar and weather report confirmed there would be a light rain for the morning. One car in the lot and I geared up and added a few streamers to the fly box before headed across the newly mown hayfield.

Town creek was mudding up the river so I tied on an olive slumpbuster and began working the runs. I didn't take too long before I had a strike and I continued to get short strikes frequently enough to prevent me from changing flies.

Finally after working a couple hundred yards I brought one to hand.

A father and son were coming up the river and I was deciding where to move to when they approached and told me that the water would be coming up soon, a full hour earlier than I had anticipated going by the "normal" weekend release of 10 – 2, I was informed that for some reason it had changed to 9 – 1 !

Some more insect sex, I know mudwall gets off of this stuff....

Was going to fish the SoHO, but Saturday night forced me to change plans and I rolled out of Winston at 2 o'clock headed back to the same ole river, same ole stretch. I had just finished wadering up when a truck pulled into the lot, a guy and his gal who hadn't fished the Smith this year headed on to the trestle pool and planned on nymphing up some trouts.

Took some pics on the walk in.

The water was much clearer and a bit lower than yesterday. I floated a comparadun despite not seen any surface activity and only a few birds working the water. The fish ignored that fly and I changed over to a natural puff daddy and managed to twitch up a nice brown that was in about three feet of water. I tracked the fly down stream and turned back to take a look. It floated back with the fly undecided, until the twitch which triggered the fish to strike.

I only caught a handful but getting the fish to rise was a battle as very few bugs were hatching. After breaking off a fly in a rhodo I was tying on another one when I heard a loud splash downstream I looked up and saw what appeared to be a bald eagle taking flight from the middle of the river with a fish secured in its talons. How cool was that!

Headed upstream for a bit

Found the source of the carrion odor, a deer hung up in a downed tree. I've smelled this for weeks on the hike in. I is going to be around for a while as the cold river water and daily submergence is slowing down the process. Also known as DSFK.

Another garden spider, some mushrooms, and a stickered windshield ended my evening of the river.

We got on the water about an hour after the wheels started turning on the damn dam. Driver and I tossed streamers and I got a fish on and off in the first five minutes. Another came to hand shortly after that. I didn't take a photo because it was a pune of a pune. Driver kept missing fish and the day wore on. Doug stayed on the sticks and we pounded beers and the bank. Finally, in desperation, we switched things up and Driver got one on a nymph.

Thought about the soho, headed to the smiff instead... Three in the lot... down the tracks... got low and high holed ... 4 anglers came upriver and one came down... got a few to rise .... woked a pod of midge sippers for way too long ... got a couple to rise but didn't seal the deal... ran out of shade in the afternoon and hiked out only to realize the low holers had split, but there were two new vehicles in the lot, gave out five BRFFF stickers...

Doug has put way too much love and commitment into that boat for you to go and that to the boat behind Doug's back!
