A line of thunderstorms cooled the air in the afternoon but as I drove north the thermometer contained to rise and the heat on July hit me as I opened the car door. I added some ice to a zip lock and added three cans of Sam Adams'76. I geared up and hiked in across the field with pants tucked into my wading socks. I picked of three ticks as they crawled up my pants leg. And I continued to check to make sure I hadn't missed any.

The cool water felt refreshing as I waded out into position. I still had a puff daddy tied on from the SoHo so I went ahead and cast that out into the run. A few cast and a nice brows jumped completely out of the water chasing after the fly but missed it. I would get that fish to rise again but never hooked it.

There were just a few yellow bugs on the water and in the air and there were hardly any fish rising but I continued to fish the dry.

Eventually I caught several of the resident punes and played the casting game. I hooked a better fish at the head of a run under the overhanging trees 45 feet out but it unbuttoned still I relished the cast and initial short lived hook up.

Fish, beer, repeat. Hiked out around 7:30 and picked off more of those little bastard ticks.

Then I drove down to the Great Road to meet up with Spork and Eric with a K as they prepared for a mousing expedition.

Got in another morning Smiffing.
Looow flow. Hiked down a good piece, crossed over and went down somemore. Fished the likely runs. Euroing again. I was covering one side of the river to the other. Moving my feet, jacking the fish again.

Breakfast beer.

As some of you know I've been thinking about buying a raft for sometime and I have looked at the flycraft but thought it really wasn't suitable for many of the  rivers that I would like to float as it isn't a self-bailer and has relatively small tubes. The Strealtcraft Hooligan XL is a much better option but is also spendy. I really wanted to get a look at one before pulling the trigger. I bummed a ride aboard Streamereater's craft and was very impressed in the construction, stability, maneuverability and comfort.

Checking the damn dam release SE said we should put in an hour or so after the release started, so we met at the basset ramp @ 1:30

Slight delay of the drive up...

Pre-rigged with a barely legal

Nice new informative signage at the ramps.

When I got to the ramp I rigged up the dry fly rod, a Sage SP that I hadn't fished in years, and encountered a couple of gruff guys from Roanoke in a grey two man raft that were going to do the same float.

SE arrived shortly after and after transferring gear we drove on up to the dam and unloaded the raft onto his DIY dolly as the DRBA doesn't think that trailer accessible ramps would allow more people to get into trouble on the river with foolhardy people launching unsuitable boats on the river.  SE and I sort of agreed that the Darwin principle should apply. SE then did the shuttle with BW and then we were off.

We began by tossing streamers and decided fairly quickly that my barely legal was a bit on the large size so I downsized to an SE special small Sex Dungeon and I got a few good fish to follow that fly.

The cold water release stirred up the bugs and a few sulfurs were popping off and risers were spotted. SE quickly switched over to the dry fly gam and despite his handle I think he really enjoys the challenges and satisfaction of the dry fly game.

After spending way too much time working picky pune risers we moved on down. I was hard to leave these fish as they were chasing down the fly, leaping out of the water on the take and just a lot of fun to fish for.

Then I took the sticks for a spell while SE whacked a few on streamers, there were a lot of follows, short strikes and flashes before bringing fish to hand.  I chided him for missing so many strikes.

We switched seats so SE could row us through the fishcamp rapid where he showed off his rowing skills to thread our way through the rapid. SE got his revenge as I was now watching fish follow and not commit and short strike before getting several to hand.

We got back to the ramp at dusk and were thankful that the Bassett ramp it trailer accessible.

This was the first time I've floated the upper stretch of river and it was very enjoyable, the scenery was remote and peaceful, there are plenty of willing fish, I'd say we caught about a couple of dozen, there is a sulfur hatch and rising fish. Oh and we had a beaver swim alongside the raft for a while.
Many thanks for a great trip!

Nice work!  How did the boat row?

I have my eye on this design as a pipe-dream replacement for my raft:

Very responsive, much more like a drift boat than a full size raft
