Slipped down for a quick between generation fish. Dries all the way.
Nothing happening a for a good while as the water settled to the max.
Beers. Watching. Setting. Walking.

And I thought the wind was bad on Saturday!

With a favorable break in the generation on the weekends I've gone back for more pune punishment on the Smith. Saturday starting at about 2:30 with sporadic bwos and a very few risers. I caught the usual suspects and a few that were smaller than expected. Fishbug joined in on the game but left early, not that that was a bad idea. There were a ton of bugs at 7:00 but not enough to get the fish excited, they would take a skated Puff Daddy, but they didn't show themselves by rising steadily. I left just as the water started to come up.

I wasn't sure that I would go back on Sunday, but somehow couldn't stay away. And I joined two other BRFFF bums on the river. They had gone down and dirty and had caught a few (Driver anyway) but keeping the fly in the water was difficult if not impossible with the gale force winds blasting down the river.

Imperial pint.

WB and Driver threw in the towel and hit the road. I was dumb enough to stay.
I moved up to less of a wind tunnel and switched to dry/dropper.
Scored a couple on two miraculous drag free drifts.

Feeling cocky, I went back down the promised land and managed one more on numerous downstream presentations in the howling wind.
Off the water by 5. FTS.

Not sure if you saw comments on original post, Brian is already crying about no paddling this weekend.

Schooling for Brian.....

Facts: The Smith River drains 215 sq. miles at Philpott dam, and 379 at the  Martinsville USGS gage...and yes it is spelled gage, not effing gauge.  This means that there is 164 sq. miles of drainage between the two locations.  If there was no water coming out of Philpott, I estimate that the flow would be 250 cfs at Martinsville.  Why, because the nearby NF Mayo is running 1.5 cfs per sq. mile as we speak, and will be more than this over the weekend.  While 350 cfs is on the low side, it is PLENTY of water for floatage below Martinsville.  I PREFER LOWER flows than this for float fishing comparable sized watersheds.  Floating the Smith at 120 cfs is entirely feasible.

This guy is masquerading as some kind of leader in the field of river floating.  He needs to shut the hell up and go to school.

Since the water was high for months, I would think the paddlers had plenty of opportunity.

I don't think he would disagree with you and I don't either. Based on what you are talking about below martinsville dam, we float and fish that with no water coming over the dam. It's not a problem at all and yes, the fishing is perfectly fine. If you folks haven't noticed, he hasn't been advertising floats on the lower river. That has left the lower river to the fishermen with few plastic hatches coming off. If you don't believe me, thats fine. I've been on the river 8x in the past 3 weeks and haven't seen one kayak or canoe.

All day Saturday to fish. No gen, 8-7, pretty day. Too pretty?
Suited up, loaded up the pack with beverages and headed down to fish a run the water had probably dropped at by now. No bugs flying. Tied on the nymphs and dredged up 2 where there should have been 5 plus.

Noticed the homies had moved just below me. Then they started to work down stream.  :o
Whatever. Watched two paired up hawks circle and with the male squalling at a interloper.

Then the phone started blowing up with texts. Fishbug and a new guy were looking for me.
The Bug arrived and joined in. The guys above us spoiled one of my favorite holes before jumping out and heading down the tracks. Then Austin cruised in. We chatted, then he started in. I needed to re-fuel, so I boogied back to the Subaru, dropped the empties and repacked the reinforcements. Found Fishbug, lost Austin. We finally got back together about the time the Bug had to bail.

Not so good pic of a good fish. Big paddle.

Tied on a puffdaddy and watched Austin snag a few more out of the back of a pool with the stonefly. he hit the road and I sat and waited. And waited. And waited. Some bugs were flying upstream, no rises. I moved upstream to slack water that had been good last week. Almost no rises. No bugs. Threw some stupid blind casts before heading out.

No generation for Sat. and Sunday, April 13-14.
Watch the gauges for April 15-May 3. They are performing maintenance at the dam and there will be no regular generation. They will be sluicing. Output could vary depending on input.
How bout a sulfur hatch?!?!
