As a new angler to learning to fly fish picking up tips from other anglers, practice, and hours of YouTube videos. I'm averaging 10 - 15 yds (30 - 45 ft.) Is this a good average for a  beginner

I find most of the fish stay a good 46 ft away from a beginner angler.   You better keep practicing.

I like to keep a little bread or corn in my vest pocket.   If the fish are more than 50 ft away( my casting limit) I can usually get them a little closer by chumming the water.   If you are in saltwater, then a can of sardines works better.
Yup, going fishing

pro tip: take a size 14 nymph hook with a bead head and put 3 wraps of hackle on it. tip it with a powerbait, power maggot and hold the fuck on. You only need to cast 10 feet or so as long as the stocking truck was just there.

ICflies

If you take your time in the water so you don't spook the fish you don't need to cast 45ft away.

Nay, but I false cast my ass off. It confuses the fish and makes them dizzy.

LOL. Did you read anything besides the title of this website that made you think this was a reputable fly fishing site?

Well, what I found backing only comes into play with bigger size largemouth bass, carp, gar, permit, snook, tarpon, large fish of that sort that want to run hard. As for the fishing I will be doing freshwater mountain trout of western NC brook, brown, and rainbows. I won't say never but will rarely need it I put close to 40 yds of 50lb spiderwire moss green braid

I can only cast five yards, so I only fish creeks that are less than 15 feet wide.

How was fishing ?

I usually cast the whole line when fishing for brookies. Those Wilson Creek brookies can be hard to reach. I do find that the orange backing helps for distance.
