We had a good turn out and a good clean up. Actually not as much trash as we have picked up in the past but that is a good thing.

Our thanks to all who showed up to help................

OK, time to pay back the water that has given so much to so many.................

We need your help Saturday, September 16th. Bring your family, bring your neighbor, bring a friend. We will place an empty trash bag in their hands and buy them lunch once they return it full. Bring your fly rod and fish afterwards.  See below for details.

Smith River Clean Up – Sep 16:  This clean up is just prior to the TU Annual Meeting being held in Roanoke. A lot of visiting TU members will be fishing the Smith River and we want to show her off in a favorable light. We will meet at the Trent Hill Canoe Ramp (behind to old burned out Chair Factory) at 8:30am and fan out from there. Depending on how many show up we hope to clean the road from the dam downstream to the end of the field behind the Mirror Plant (where he who shall not be named has been dumping all his empties), the parking lot at Rosemont and the horseshoe section from Trent Hill downstream to Papa’s Pizza. We will have bags and drinking water – you should bring gloves, long pants, and sturdy walking shoes. We do not anticipate anyone getting into water but bring waders if you like.  All trash will be consolidated at the Trent Hill Canoe Ramp.  Al Kittredge aakitt@earthlink.net  Cell 910-624-3457  is heading up this effort. Contact him if you have questions

Smith River Trout Unlimited (SRTU) will hold it’s quarterly meeting on Thursday, September 7, 2017,  6:30 p.m., at Rania’s Restaurant, 147 Main St, Martinsville VA .  Glen Stevens an Associate Professor of Environmental Science at Ferrum College will give a presentation on benthic macroinvertebrates. Benthic (meaning “bottom-dwelling”) macroinvertebrates are small aquatic animals and the aquatic larval stages of insects. They include dragonfly, mayfly, caddis and stonefly larvae, snails, worms, beetles and more. They lack a backbone, are visible without the aid of a microscope and are found in and around water bodies during some period of their lives. Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly used as indicators of the biological condition of waterbodies. Based on the macroinvertebrate diversity and sensitivity to pollution, we gain an understanding of our streams’ health.  SRTU member Wayne Kirkpatrick will be there with his “Tub of Bugs” to help with “hands on” identification

Introduction of Chris Powell, recently named Philpott Operations Manager – Chris will give us a short update on Philpott repairs

“Fly box of Smith River Specials” – We are soliciting  flies to fill a fly box to donate to the “Silent Auction” being held at the TU Annual Meeting in Roanoke – If on Sept 7th everyone could donate 3 each or more of your “go to” flies we could fill a box in a hurry.

Don’t forget the Swap Table   -  If you have not participated you may be missing out. In the recent past we have had books, magazines (free for the taking), rods, reels, tying vises,  waders, vests, tackle boxes and more. Bring what you want to sell or trade. Slap your name and a price on it and recycle the stuff you don't use or need. Look around for those "it was a good idea at the time" purchases you made but now reside in the back of your closet or garage. Be ready to haggle. Bring some extra cash and walk away with some neat "I need one of those" items!
