Worm Hatch..
« on: January 27, 2012, 21:13:55 PM »

<a href="http://youtu.be/kfq5b1bppJQ" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://youtu.be/kfq5b1bppJQ</a>

After four long days of slinging drywall mud, today I found a break in the work, grabbed the new 6.5' 2 wt that I built a while back, and rolled out..I headed to the home water, but at the first crossing down low, I saw that the rain last night had it up a good bit and muddy as hell..I decided to check out a small feeder to see if it might be fish-able..The small stream was up, and stained, but looked like it might have some potential for a pink worm hatch with the insanely warm temps we've been having..

I struggled for a bit, but eventually found the weak seams that would grant my fly entry into in the feeding zone..Once I did it was on, and  found multiple fish in most nice holes..It was just what I needed, although I took a nasty spill that sent my face within 1/2" of being smashed full speed into a jutting boulder..I was sure I was gonna lose some teeth for a second, luckily I was able to get my arm up just in time to save my face..Still got real wet, and I'm sure I'll have some bruises popping up..Fuck it, the tiny fish were worth it..

By the time I left the feeder, the home water proper had cleared up a good bit, and was looking inviting, so I parked and fished up from the confluence of the feeder that I had fished earlier..

This guy lives at the confluence pool..He was right in the feeding lane, and made a hell of a ruckus trying to spook the pool as I approached, but once I moved into position he just sat on his perch, and watched me..I caught half a dozen fish from his run even with his carrying on..

Being that the conditions were such, I gave equal time to one of Petey's dodgy flies that I got from Tranny..It caught fish, but my flash belly es jay dubs out fished it 3 to 1..Sorry Holmes..

He is almost always there..when the water is low and clear he ruins the pool before you get there every time..

Really solid Chit BRA... Yeah that fly that you used, for some reason dynamite on brookies, bows will hit as you discovered but they prefer a san juan any days. Brookies up here will hit the san juan but prefer the pink weenie. The way it is, I guess. Really enjoyed the pics, you have some nice water down there.

Spot on in your assessment of the bow/brookie divide over weenie/SJW..
Funny thing about the water out here..It is far enough from the "high quality" trout areas that it is considered to be sub par, and therefore gets very little pressure..I have no complaints however..

Good to know that my assesment is spot on. I guess brookies are plain dumber to fall for the pink weenie. It's funny how they aren't exactly crazy over the pink san juan though. Maybe brookies prefer more action in the fly, who knows. You ever try fishing a girdle bug(size 12-14) with a beadhead and sexi-floss legs? I use brown chenille amber legs or black chenille/white legs and destroy bows wherever I go. I could send you some to try if you'd like... I tie them different then most folks but would be interested in seeing how the rainbows like them down there...

We fish the hell out of some girdle bugs around here..The home water in particular is crawling with stoneflies..When the water is dirty they eat the giants..to match those we tie them in 6's and the real bugs are still bigger..I'm a stonefly fanatic..Would love to try out some of your variations sometime..In the sizes you are talking about I think they would work well in lower water conditions..

Yeah these variants are tied way different than the originals. I've noticed that they take fish in really small creeks. I'll definately send you a couple to test out. I've never been on a bow stream where they didn't crush fish. The smaller size has been the ticket for me on some waters. I'll shoot you a PM.

Good chit man.  I haven't tried the SJW on rainbows lately.  Might need to try it to see.  I stick to the pink weenie on brookies and bows...and it'll work for the wild browns too.    -0-

Pink San Juan! Now that's dodgy! The weenie is the go to when things get tough but a man has to draw the line somewhere. ;D
