Hummers second batch
« on: July 28, 2010, 21:16:53 PM »
I was changing the humming bird feeder fluids today, and notice this years second brood of young.
They were pretty playful around the feeders so I decided to snap some pics of their antics.
They get brave soon after they fledge, as one of the little males made a game of chasing a dragon fly around the ceder trees. It was funny to see the dragon fly turn around and face the hummer down, even funnier to see the hummer back off once the dragonfly turned around, he wasn't so brave then.

I'm surprised at how tolerant the adults are of the young at the feeders. They must still be young enough to be tolerated. Another week or so, and the adults will chase them from the feeders.

I put five feeders around the yard, some of them out of sight of the others, so the young birds will always find them, when the adults are guarding the main feeders.

I never get tired of watching the acrobatics of flight with these birds. They are like the F22's of the aviary world, able to stop and turn on a dime and fly back-words.

Here are some pics

Was out today dead-heading flowers to keep the blooms up, and notice some very young birds on the smaller flowers. I set up the camera, later this evening thinking the parents would take them to the feeders. Here is a couple more shots from this evening.

The picture titled fledgling is one of the smallest birds I have seen in 10 years.
When they are this young, they haven't developed a fear factor yet, and they fly in very close.
I try not to move, so they get used to me sitting near the feeder, and become accustom to me when they feed. It pays off when you want to get pictures of them.

I have been seeing small ones with the adults also. I only have two feeders, but it seems like they take turns pretty good at this point. 8)

Just stop at one of the rest stops on the way to the SOHO one morning, there are always a few toe tappers hanging around the bath room.
