Sharkskin
« on: January 14, 2010, 14:48:25 PM »
Well, I think I have the perfect (for me) dry fly outfit.  My old BIIX 8 3/4 foot Winston, my wife's christmas gift to me..a 4 wt hatch reel and so I sprung for the Scietinfic Anglers Sharkskin (at least I found a 15% discount.)  Anyone fishing with this line and how does it last?

Yep, tried it a few months ago.man, that stuff's pricy, but it's pretty darn near perfect, way slicker than others. I use SA Mastery XPS or GPX. Get it on ebay for $30. I can't cane out $80+ on line that gets tore up after a half season. U use DT or WF? Living in South Africa, found DT was worth it's weight in gold coz once one side is tore up, switch it up with the side tied to the backing and u have a brand new line to tie a leader to. Besides fishing streams no more than 20ft, I don't ever cast more than 30 yards...

I used a sharkskin last year in Michigan, the SoHo, and out west.  Love throwing that line.  You'll have to get used to the sound as it runs through the guides - sounds a little funny on a graphite rod because of the uneven surface.

Best part is that with that uneven surface - you can burn your finger when you get a real screamer (or is that a reel screamer).
Stalk softly and carry a green stick.

Went out in the yard yesterday and gave it a try.  It is smooth but your are right, the sound is a bit different but maybe will grow to love it.  Can't wait to hear the big ole trout strip it off, add a bit of new sound to the moment....

I sure hope it last more than half a season because if that is the case it may be my last experience with it, normally use Rio Gold which is just fine.

I got to tell you the Hatch reels are very sweet.  Have a 5 wt (also a gift) that I fished with last year and it is the smoothest reel I have ever fished with bar none.
Never thought a trout reel could be so important when you get that big trout on, get him on the reel and have such confidence in the drag.

My Dry Fly Rig and probably most fished rig is a 9' 4wt BIIx with a sharkskin. For my limited casting ability, this rig is perfect. Lays it down very gently on the Soho and Wataug. Will also handle dry droppers and nymph rigs with no problems. Smile at your buddies who talk about the sound of the line while you are catching fish. 8)

my line is a little over a year old and i still think it casts fine, but lefty i ain't

I want a Sharkskin Magnum for my new 6 wt. streamer rod for throwing smallie poppers this summer
My picture weighs more than your picture.
