Horace Kephart 'secret' book finally published...
« on: September 24, 2009, 20:26:03 PM »
There is a surprise dimension to the 75th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

One of the men who campaigned for creation of the park — Horace Kephart — wrote a novel set in the mountains and it had been passed down, unpublished, in his family for 80 years.

The Great Smoky Mountains Association has published the book, titled "Smoky Mountain Magic."

The novel was completed in 1929 — two years before Kephart's death.

The famed outdoorsman came to the mountains in 1904 and, with photographer George Masa, became a compelling voice for conservation of the Smokies as a park.

The 248-page novel is available in hardcover and paperback at park visitor centers, area bookstores an online through the association.

If you buy it from the Great Smoky Mountains Association the profits go back into the park.

I am currently reading "Our Southern Highlanders" after seeing so many posts about it on here.  The book has been a great read, and it's cool to see what this area was like a century ago.  I hope our library gets a copy of this book so I can check it out next.  Kephart is a great author.

If you like Kephart you might want to take a look at his  book Camping and Woodcraft.
