Unless I am mistaken, I believe they sawed Daniel Pearl's head off with a dull knife and filmed it.  I honestly do not understand why people cannot understand that these people are crazy and dangerous beyond words.  Anybody who defends them is completely nuts.

5x, I don't think I've seen anybody in this thread defend the animals who have done such things.  At least in my case, I'm just trying to understand the laws that apply and, I suppose, defend them.  Although I may not always agree or understand them, we are a nation of laws and we have gotten this far by defending them.  Even when it was not easy or expedient.

I wish it were simple, but apparently it is not.

Oh well, thanks for trying to explain it better so an old man can understand.

Good informative discussion here.

Main thing I'm coming away with is the laws we put in place should be based on logic and reason of the times - with the Constitution in mind to a point while mindful that the forefathers didn't deal with such a complex terrorist problem.

Bottom line for me:
Americans, as TM put it: "for the most part are a nation of kind, law abiding, and morally good people."
Terrorists, as Cmiller put it: like rabbid dogs

Different sets of rules are in order.

The Wall Street Journal ran an opinion piece a few days ago on this.  It helps explain some of the complexities to be considered when deciding how to try the detainees.

actually, the forefathers had a more serious "terrorist" problem..... it bloodily persisted from jamestown till the 1890's..... heck, the seminoles have yet to surrender. some say the problem persists to this day.

the constitution is a living document invented by some people who were a helluva lot smarter than any of us here. it is foolish to ammend the constitution for the sake of change or for the sake of vengeance.

that said, fry the bastids.

The primary objective of any living organism is survival. The primary objective of any nation is protection of its citizenship and defense of its borders. If the nation does not survive, any secondary goal is useless.

Nations are not moral and never have been. There has never been a nation that acted morally when self defense was necessay, not even the USA.

The problem is that the USA states that it is moral. We never can be, not if we are to protect our citizens in the most effective fashion.

The choice is not the easy choice between good and evil as some would believe. It is between doing evil to protect yourself against a greater evil. It is doing evil against those who would do evil againt you.

Unfortunately, those who are protected often times do not realize what is sometimes, or often, needed to provide that level of protection.

I am reminded of a female yuppie from New York, who was with me on a guided tour of an archeological project.  One of the Stanford students on the project said that he was joining the Army after graduation. She said, "Why would you waste your life doing that?" I felt like saying, "To protect your rights, you little liberal assh*le!" True story which shows how disconnected some people are from what others sacrifice for our defense.
