Upper Ruby
« on: June 28, 2012, 18:45:40 PM »
Today was low 70's and clear and I made the journey to the Upper Ruby.  When I say upper it means 36 miles of gravel road south of where the pavement ends.  But I got to tell you it is one beautiful 36 miles.  The river is in perfect shape and with a 3 wt and one size 16 green dubbed elk hair caddis and a bit of climbing and there is no end to the number of brookies and cuts you can catch.

Maybe you could get a cast through a pool without a fish but I bet the % was less than 10%.   I have no idea how many fish there are in this place but it is crazy.  However, it is always amazing to see a trout take a small fly.  Some just knock the hell out of it, others sip it and some are acrobats.  And as you all know, there is no prettier trout in the land than a nice brookie.

Up this high you keep a sharp eye for Mr Grizzly but I saw no tracks which is a good thing and every few minutes just take a look around to see if there is company coming.

The upper Ruby was on my top 3.

When we moved out to Hendersonville from San Diego I drove the car across solo. I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in Montana.
I called the wife and let her know that I was just outside of Cameron MT, somewhat disoriented by my navigational error, but safe. I figured I would spend a few days fishing since I was there anyhow.

The first day I fished the Madison, second day I caught the gallatin stained and running high so I hustled back to the Madison that evening, planning on leaving in the morning for the Ruby.

After fishing the late shift at three dollar bridge I hopped in the car, pulled out onto hwy 287 and turned towards Driftwaters for a burger. Halfway into the two mile jaunt my engine shut off completely without so much as a sputter. I coasted as far as I could and pulled off to the side of the road. A Subaru driven by a guy from Butte, sans seatbelt but with cold beer offered to take me over to Driftwaters and introduce me to the owner, Jerry.  As it tuned out Jerry is a retired auto mechanic.
I ended up staying there 10 days running shuttles for Jerry & his wife taking drift boat trailers down river to the take outs. In between trips I helped Jerry change out my timing belt.

Thanks for the report & pictures, I never made it to the Ruby.

How did the wife take the news of staying there for 10 more days?

Thanks for sharing on Upper Ruby.  If you are going to get stuck for 10 days, MT is about the best place you could be.  Unless its winter
Yup, going fishing

When I explained that I was getting a $1,000 repair done on the car in exchange for running shuttles she wasn't too disappointed.
